INDOOR PROGRAM COACHES

Monroe Olsen: Head Varsity Coach

Monroe Olsen began playing volleyball at the age of 8, inspired by her two older sisters, and started competing at 12 in Northwest Indiana through both club and high school programs. She continued her volleyball career at The University of Notre Dame, where she played for four years and served as team captain in her final season. Monroe also continues to compete in the Volleyball League of America (VLA) for the past two years. 

With eight years of coaching experience in club volleyball and private training, Monroe is entering her second year as Head Coach at Mesquite High School. She is committed to developing athletes through a combination of technical skill instruction, intentional training, and fostering teamwork and mental toughness. 

Beyond the court, Monroe is dedicated to mentorship, personal growth, and creating a positive, disciplined, and competitive environment for student-athletes. 

Monroe will lead the program and have a focus with the offense. 

Troy Kates: Varsity Assistant Coach

Troy Kates has been playing volleyball since the age of 12 and continues to compete today, playing for the VLA team Sun City IX. He played four years of collegiate volleyball at Dominican University, earning two final four appearances and three conference championships. 

As a coach, Troy has over six years of experience, including seasons at 630 Volleyball in Chicago where he led two teams to Top 3 finishes at AAU Nationals. In Arizona, he has coached 18 Star Lord, 16 Hawkeye, and currently the 15 Black Panther team at Aspire, most recently earning a top finish with 16 Hawkeye at AAU 2025. He has also coached girls at Richard’s High School, winning a conference championship, and currently serves as Head Coach at Mesquite High School for boys indoor. 

Troy’s coaching philosophy centers on strategic offense, team unity, and helping athletes make smart, in-the-moment decisions. 

He will assist the program primarily with the middle blockers, & front row defense. 

Rayleen Rivera: Varsity Assistant Coach

Rayleen currently competes in the Volleyball League of America for the past 3 years. She began her collegiate career at Pasadena City College, earning All-South Coast Conference First Team honors as an outside hitter.. She then transferred to William Woods University on scholarship, where she majored in Exercise Science with a Human Performance focus. At WWU, she led her 

team in offensive points (347.5) and aces (67), setting the school record for most aces in a match (8). 

As a coach Ray was an assistant coach at The University of Saint Mary in Kansas, followed by her current role at Mesquite High School. She brings high-level playing expertise, technical precision, and a drive to help athletes reach their full potential. 

Rayleen will assist the program primarily with our outside hitters, and team serve & pass. 

Jasmine Urban: Head JV Coach

Jasmine Urban has over 18 years of volleyball experience as a player, coach, and mentor. She was a First Team All-Conference honoree at both Norco High School (2018) and Riverside City College (2019) before transferring to Park University, where she helped win back-to-back Cal Pac Conference Championships in 2021 and 2022. Jasmine earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Park University. Her coaching career includes serving as a Graduate Assistant at Park University, an Assistant Coach at Benedictine University for indoor and beach volleyball, and her current roles as Assistant Coach for Benedictine University Mesa, Head Coach for Sand Club’s Juniors Beach Volleyball program, and Head Beach Volleyball Coach at Mesquite High School. 

Jasmine will assist the program by being the head JV coach focusing on building her athletes’ game IQ, technical skills, and character, preparing them for success both on and off the court.

Leilani Burgess: FROSH Head Coach

Leilani is entering her first year of coaching as the FROSH Girls Head Coach at Mesquite High School. With six years of playing experience as an outside hitter, she brings a strong foundation in fundamentals, a deep love for the game, and a fresh perspective. Leilani is passionate about building her athletes’ skills, confidence, and teamwork from the ground up, creating a fun and competitive environment where players can grow. 

Leilani will assist the program by being the head FROSH coach.
